Social media video sizes

Last reviewed: November 2026

Every platform shows video in its own shape. Post a landscape clip to a vertical feed and it either shrinks between bars or gets cropped wherever the app decides — so the safest move is to export each video in the shape the platform expects.

The table lists the aspect ratio and recommended resolution for each major placement. These sizes have been stable for years. Length and file-size limits change more often, so check the platform’s own help pages for those.

Which size should I use?

Four shapes cover every feed

Pick by where the video will be watched. Whatever you choose, keep faces and text away from the edges: apps draw buttons and captions over vertical video.

  • 9:16

    1080 × 1920

One video for every vertical feed

TikTok, YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels and Stories, Facebook Reels and Snapchat all play 9:16 full-screen. If you make one version, make this one.

  • 4:5

    1080 × 1350

    Instagram and Facebook feed posts

The standard portrait feed shape — taller than square, so it covers more of the screen while people scroll.

  • 1:1

    1080 × 1080

The same file in many feeds

Square plays well almost everywhere — Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn and X — so it's the safe choice for cross-posting.

  • 16:9

    1920 × 1080

    YouTube, websites and TV

The standard landscape shape for regular video players. Keep your original 16:9 for these.
